How to Restore Old Video Quality: VHS and MP4 to HD

To improve old video quality, start with the best digital capture, fix visible capture problems, then test AI restoration on a short sample. Compare the enhanced result at its intended viewing size, checking motion as well as individual frames. Exporting a larger file alone does not restore detail.

1. Preserve and inspect your source

If the footage is on VHS, Hi8 or MiniDV, digitize it first. Keep the original capture unchanged. Use the highest-quality digital copy available instead of a screen recording or repeatedly downloaded social video.

Check dimensions, duration, aspect ratio and playback. Old footage may be 4:3 rather than 16:9. Preserve that shape instead of stretching faces horizontally. Check moving edges rather than assuming a file marked 480p is progressive.

2. Fix interlacing and color separately

Comb-like horizontal lines around moving subjects suggest interlacing. Use a suitable deinterlacing workflow in your editor before upscaling. If the image is orange, faded or underexposed, adjust white balance and levels separately. Avoid strong sharpening that exaggerates grain and edge halos.

Super-resolution addresses apparent detail and noise. It does not repair a damaged cassette, retrieve deleted frames or guarantee accurate reconstruction of a face.

3. Prepare a 5-second test

Choose a scene with fine detail and movement, such as a person turning or a camera pan. A static title card is not enough to judge stability between frames. Export a playable MP4 with as little additional compression as practical.

4. Check the output size

Output settings are automatic in the current service; inspect the downloaded dimensions. For a 1080p delivery target, resize in your editor if needed. A 480-line progressive source scaled to 1080 lines needs a 2.25-times increase in height, not exactly 2 times. Preserve aspect ratio and inspect the downloaded dimensions, especially for 4:3 or portrait material.

A larger output adds pixels but does not guarantee native 4K detail. AI can infer plausible textures that change faces or lettering. Inspect your sample before paying to process a longer clip.

5. Compare and download

• Compare both versions at the same displayed size.
• Watch for waxy skin, changed features and shimmering textures.
• Inspect writing and fine edges for invented patterns.
• Check playback, timing and audio synchronization in the downloaded file.

If the sample works, prepare a paid clip within the selected upload tool's limits. Keep your original and download the result while it is available; files are retained for 3 days.
