How to Enhance Video Sound: Fix Audio Quality with AI

To enhance video sound, work in this order: reduce background noise, even out the volume so the voice sits at a steady level, then shape the voice with gentle EQ and compression. Work on a copy of the audio, listen on both headphones and speakers, and back off as soon as the voice starts to sound watery or robotic.

How AI speech enhancement works

AI speech enhancement models are trained on clean speech mixed with many kinds of noise, so they learn to predict which parts of a recording belong to a voice and which do not. A noise gate only mutes quiet passages and EQ cuts whole frequency ranges; a speech model can reduce noise that overlaps with the voice itself.

The trade-off is that the model partly rebuilds the voice rather than only filtering it. Pushed too far, it produces a thin or metallic sound, clips the ends of words and removes natural room tone. Background music behind speech is especially hard to separate cleanly.

Tools you can use

• Premiere Pro Enhance Speech: AI dialogue cleanup in the Essential Sound panel, applied inside your edit.
• DaVinci Resolve Studio: its AI Voice Isolation effect is part of the paid Studio edition, not the free version.
• Adobe Podcast Enhance Speech: a browser tool. The free plan works on audio files, so export the audio from your video first.
• Audacity: free, open-source audio editing with profile-based Noise Reduction, normalization and compression. With the FFmpeg library installed it can import the audio from video files.
• iZotope RX and similar audio-repair suites: for de-clipping, de-reverb and difficult noise when quick tools are not enough.

Step by step: enhance video sound for free with Audacity

1. Get the audio out. Import the video into Audacity with FFmpeg installed, or export a WAV file from your video editor. Keep the original file untouched.
2. Take a noise profile. Select a second or two where only the background noise is audible, open the Noise Reduction effect and click Get Noise Profile.
3. Apply it gently. Select the whole track, open Noise Reduction again and start with modest settings. Listen to a passage with speech; if the voice sounds watery, reduce the amount.
4. Even out the level. Apply light compression to narrow the gap between quiet and loud words, then normalize the track so it plays at a consistent level without clipping.
5. Put it back in the video. Export a WAV, import it into your editor, line it up with the picture, mute the original audio and export the finished video once.

With an AI tool such as Enhance Speech or Voice Isolation, steps 2 and 3 become a single effect with a strength or mix control. Start below full strength and blend some of the original sound back in if the voice loses its natural character.

Tips for better results

• Steady noise is the easiest to remove because it is predictable; sudden sounds are much harder.
• Leave a little room tone. Dead silence between words sounds unnatural, especially next to clips that still have ambience.
• Treat every clip in a scene the same way, or the background will change audibly at each cut.
• Clean the voice before adding music. Once music is mixed in, separating it from speech again is far harder.
• Fix it at the source next time. A microphone close to the speaker, a quieter room and switched-off fans do more than any repair tool.

What audio enhancement cannot fix

• Words that are completely drowned out by louder noise or music
• Severe clipping and distortion, which can only be partly repaired
• A voice recorded so far away that it is mostly room echo
• Two people talking over each other into one microphone

For broadcast delivery, music, legal recordings or badly damaged audio, use a dedicated audio editor such as Adobe Audition or iZotope RX, or hire an audio engineer. These give precise control over individual frequencies, de-essing, de-clipping and multiband compression, and let you judge results with meters rather than by ear alone.
